Module 4

Building Inclusive Learning Environments

Key question: How can correctional environments become places where everyone has the opportunity to learn?

Overview only. This module's interactive activities are not yet implemented. The content below is taken from the Trainer's Manual.

Introduction

The aim of this module is to bring together the knowledge, understanding and practical skills developed throughout the previous three FLEX-ability modules and support participants in translating them into meaningful changes within their own correctional settings.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this module, learners will be able to:

  • Analyse how institutional practices, professional attitudes and environmental factors influence access to education, participation and engagement among people with diverse learning needs.
  • Plan inclusive learning environments that respond to multilingual learners, people affected by trauma and those with specific learning difficulties, while considering institutional requirements and available resources.
  • Coordinate inclusive approaches across correctional departments, identifying professional responsibilities, opportunities for collaboration and appropriate pathways for specialist support.
  • Identify and develop opportunities for cooperation with community organisations and external education providers to support continuity of learning, lifelong learning and reintegration.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of inclusive communication and educational practices using appropriate indicators of accessibility, participation, engagement and learner experience.
  • Develop and justify a realistic action plan for improving inclusive practice within their own correctional setting, identifying priorities, responsibilities, implementation challenges and methods for reviewing progress.
