Module 3
Inclusive Communication and Teaching Strategies
Key question: How (and why!) can correctional staff create learning environments that work for everyone?
Overview only. This module's interactive activities are not yet implemented. The content below is taken from the Trainer's Manual.
Introduction
The aim of Module 3 is to equip correctional practitioners with practical approaches to inclusive communication and teaching, building on established good practice in correctional settings, including trauma-informed approaches, respectful communication and person-centred support.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this chapter, learners will be able to:
- Explain how inclusive communication and teaching practices align with international standards, trauma-informed approaches and rehabilitation-oriented correctional practice.
- Analyse communication and learning barriers in correctional settings, considering individual learning needs, institutional conditions and professional responsibilities.
- Apply inclusive communication and teaching strategies to realistic situations, adapting instructions, activities and interactions to support diverse learning needs.
- Evaluate when learning-needs screening may be appropriate, distinguish screening from diagnosis, and identify suitable conditions and referral pathways for further support.
- Collaborate with relevant professionals to identify appropriate responses to learning barriers, respecting professional boundaries, confidentiality and institutional procedures.
- Design realistic improvements to communication, learning activities or support arrangements within their own correctional context, drawing on reflective practice and established good practice.
One principle to carry through the module
Recognise the barrier, not the deficit – adapt the response, not the expectation.
