Introduction
The aim of this module is to develop correctional educators' understanding of the diverse learning needs, educational backgrounds and experiences of people in detention, and how these influence participation in education. The module supports learners in recognising indicators of common learning difficulties, particularly dyslexia, distinguishing these from learning preferences, low motivation or behavioural challenges, and understanding how the correctional environment itself can create barriers to learning.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this chapter, learners will be able to:
- understand the diversity of learning needs among incarcerated learners;
- describe the educational profile of many incarcerated learners;
- recognize indicators of common learning difficulties, particularly dyslexia;
- distinguish learning preferences from learning difficulties;
- understand how the prison environment influences learning;
- distinguish learning difficulties from lack of motivation or behavioral problems;
- apply inclusive teaching strategies that support all learners.
